School and community-
based services

Please speak to your child’s school to see if there is any emotional health and well-being support offered in-house.

Build Sound Minds. Action for Children

This is an NHS funded service offering support to young people aged 0-17 years who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

We work closely with this service and will transfer referrals to them if it is felt that they are the most suitable service to help you or your child.

Build Sounds Minds also accepts direct referrals from professionals or the family can self-refer. More details can be found by visiting the Action for Children website, or you can call them direct on 01246 277422.

Kooth: This is an on-line ‘free, safe and anonymous’ counselling and support service for young people aged 11-18

Compass Changing Lives Service – Mental Health Support Teams (MHST) 

This is a new early intervention mental health support service. MHST are currently based in The Bolsover School, Lady Manners School, Kirk Hallam, Bemrose, Noel Baker and The Kingsmead School. Each MHST offers support/advice to an identified network of project schools/colleges. 

The MHST will work with children/young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties. The service offers advice/support around low mood, anxiety, worries, managing stress and change/transition.

The service is for children/young people aged between 5-18 years (and up to 25 if the young person has SEND or is a care leaver).

NHS talking therapies

Patients aged 16 or over who are registered with a Derbyshire GP practice and think that they would benefit from a talking therapy can choose from any of these services. 

All of these providers offer the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended therapies and approaches for common mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Patients can choose the provider closest to their home, workplace or family; or the service with the shortest waiting times, the widest choice of types of treatment, or the highest recovery or reliable improvement scores.

Online resources

Mental Health Support is available in Derbyshire for Parents, Professionals, and Young People. The NHS Derby & Derbyshire Emotional Health & Wellbeing Toolkit has been designed collaboratively by professionals who work across Derby & Derbyshire to help plan and deliver care & support for people who are feeling stressed, anxious or depressed, or just want to feel happier. The toolkit is designed for professionals, members of the public, children and young people who wish to access local services or just require further information on the services that are available to them.

Mental health support is now available to Derbyshire residents of all ages through a new mental health support line. Call 0800 028 0077 between the hours of 9am and midnight, seven days a week.

Sleep Helpline: This is a free helpline run by trained sleep advisors from The Sleep Charity for parents and young people with sleep difficulties. Shout: A free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone who is struggling to cope. To start a conversation, text the word 'SHOUT' to 85258.

The National Autistic Society provides information and support for people with Autism and their families and for professionals. They are a very active organisation and offer some really useful information about strategies and approaches for supporting people with Autism.
